An apprenticeship isn't just about the workplace and college – it's also the chance to go abroad. During your apprenticeship, you can gain real experience abroad and broaden your horizons. You get to know new ways of working, improve your language skills and grow through tasks that help you progress – both professionally and personally.
You learn to get around safely in other countries. You gain new professional insights and learn how work functions outside of Germany. You grow through new tasks and strengthen your self-confidence. And in the end, you take away an additional qualification: the Europass Mobility.

A month in Spain instead of everyday life in Germany.
Elina (21) and Kevin (23), apprentices at Tesla in Grünheide, experienced precisely that: a work placement abroad in Seville with Erasmus+
At the beginning everything was new – language, people, surroundings. Uncertainty was there. Despite this, both seized the opportunity and simply got started.
Travel and accommodation were organised via Erasmus+ – this made getting started abroad easily possible. Your IHK will support you with the organisation.
Work, live, experience
In Seville, the two of them worked quite normally: in the supermarket, stacking shelves, receiving goods or in the bakery department.
„We didn't know a word of Spanish,“ Kevin recounts. Nevertheless, it worked – with English, gestures and openness.
And that is precisely what makes the difference: you grow into situations that you couldn't possibly have planned for beforehand.
After work, the city became an experience. New people, new places, trips around Seville – and even a trip to Gibraltar.
What they took away from it
What remains is more than just a month abroad.
Elina and Kevin say that they have become more self-confident and have gained completely new perspectives on their training.
„You grow enormously from such a stay abroad,“ says Elina.

Internships abroad are generally possible in any country in the world. The decision for a specific country often depends on the desired learning objectives or the available funding.
According to the Vocational Training Act, up to a quarter of the regular training period can be spent abroad (BBiG § 2 para. (3)). In a three-year training programme, for example, that is nine months. This time can be taken in one block or in separate periods.
Typically, most trainees and companies opt for a duration of two to five weeks.

The training company is obliged to continue paying the training allowance during the stay abroad. However, it does not need to cover the travel and accommodation costs. These costs are, however, financed through the funding.
Through the Erasmus+ education programme, trainees receive financial support for almost all countries in Europe, e.g. through the Azubi-Mobil project: www.azubi-mobil.de
With the BMBF's new "Ausbildung Weltweit" project, apprentices now also have the chance to be sent abroad globally and acquire international professional skills. It is available to both apprentices and trainers.
